There is so much water in the village that for a moment it will make you think you are in a rural Venice. Vevcani is mentioned as a rural settlement since the end of the 9th century, when it was developed and economically strong. It is located at the foot of Jablanica, at a distance of 14 km from Struga. This terrain is divided into Gorno and Dolno maalo, with an altitude ranging from 830 to 960 meters above sea level, with an area of about 35 km2. Vevcani abounds in city charm and charm. Today it is a symbol of independence and protest against decisions that do not correspond to the local interest of all united cohabitants. To this day, they declare themselves a state within a state. There is also a memorial in Vevcani – the house of the physicist Mihailo Pupin, who once lived here.
Vevcani springs
Vevchansk springs are located at 900 meters above sea level. In 1997. have been declared a Monument of Nature. From the center of Vevcani to the site, the road is paved and has about 550 meters, and can be reached on foot. Vevcani springs are characterized by a very rich biological diversity and are one of the most visited places in Macedonia by domestic and foreign tourists.
During the evening and night hours, the springs can be visited because they are lit everywhere, underwater spotlights are placed, which gives the water a special beauty. The abundance of water, and the cave from which it springs is a special attraction for attracting domestic and foreign tourists, on the spot there are tables with benches for rest, a gazebo is built, and there are three smaller churches that are always open for visit.
Vevcani Carnival
You will truly experience Vevcani when you decide to become part of the traditional pagan carnival, which is considered to have existed for 1400 years – the Vevcani Carnival. It starts on January 13th. Then the masks are divided into upper neighborhood and lower neighborhood. When all the masked with drums and trumpets gather, they go to the middle of the village to present their masks, where there are many people who are looking forward to the masks. When the masks are presented, they go in such a disguise to visit a person named Vasil, Vasko, etc. There is music at the playground in the evening and everyone gathers there. The next day all the masks gather in the middle of the village and light the masks, which means the chase of the evil from last year, because it is known that the Vevcani Carnival – Vasilica is still ordered and Old New Year. Over 500,000 people come to this carnival, including foreigners who come especially for this day.
