One of the most recognizable attractions of all Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in this picturesque city, above the river Neretva. Rebuilt in the 16th century by the Turks, the Old Bridge is a symbol of the whole city. In the period when it was built, it was a new achievement in the architecture of that time, but its beauty and importance are not less today. In front of him on the same place stood a wooden suspension bridge, and next to it were built two towers named Halebiya and Tara. Also known as Mostar, they represented the guardians of the bridge, but also the symbol after which the city was named. Unfortunately, the 16th-century bridge was demolished during the 1993 war. However, the bridge was not abandoned even after the bombing. In 2004, the bridge was renovated and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It is the central attraction of the old town, which is equally stunningly built. Surrounded by old stone buildings and mosques, it leaves a fairytale impression on tourists. Therefore, it is not surprising that it is often crowded, so it may be best to visit in the morning, when there are fewer tourists on the streets. For the bravest it is possible to enter the water and swim in the Neretva. The beauty of the river and the Old Bridge is recognized in the footage of many Yugoslav films, so you should not miss the opportunity to walk along one of the most picturesque bridges in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
