About the cave
According to speleologists, Peshna is a cave with the largest opening in the Balkans – the height of the opening is 40 meters, and the width is 56 meters. The length of the cave is 124 meters. It is located near Makedonski Brod. The beauty of the cave is what the New York Times compared to Helms Deep from The Lord of the Rings. From the extreme northern part of the cave, after heavy rains and melting snow, a strong spring emerges, which in the dry periods of the year dries completely. According to the local population, the water sinks from the village of Krapa, which is located at a higher altitude, and which forms several lakes and waterfalls in the “largest cave system in our country”, which is assumed to be as long as ten kilometers.
According to the legend that is still told today, in the 14th century the sung Macedonian hero Krali Marko built a house for his sister Peshna at the very beginning of the cave, which later came to be called Peshna. The house with its huge and thick stone walls looks like a small fortress. Thanks to the thick stone walls, today part of the fortress is left and can be seen. This masterpiece of nature with its magnificent size, its grandeur and its beauty will leave you breathless.
It is interesting for this cave that in spring, when the snow from the high mountains melts in that area, at the entrance of the cave you will be greeted by the murmur of a small river that springs from the small lake at the end of the cave, then you will be greeted by the walls of the house of Peshna, and right behind it a huge cave that will take your breath away. The upper part of the cave, which is thirty meters high, is not characterized by many stalactites, but you will come across beautiful shapes made of the rock itself that will definitely keep your view. No matter where you look, you will come across rocks that reach a height of over two meters with beautiful playful relief. Thanks to the huge opening, the sun’s rays manage to penetrate even to the end of the cave and you can walk through it without any problem. When you reach the end of the cave itself, look back so as not to miss this extraordinary view that captivates with its beauty.
